The Peace Corps is a volunteer program run by the United States government. The stated mission of the Peace Corps includes providing technical assistance, helping people outside the United States to understand American culture, and helping Americans to understand the cultures of other countries. The work is generally related to social and economic development. Each program participant, a Peace Corps Volunteer, is someone typically with or without a college degree, who works abroad for a period of two years after three months of training.

Volunteers work with governments, schools, Health care, non-profit organizations, non-government organizations, and entrepreneurs in education, business, information technology, agriculture, and the environment. After 24 months of service, volunteers can request an extension of service.

The Voluntary Service Officer (Chief Voluntary Service {VSO}) of VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System (VASNHS), holds a major position on the Director’s Staff of this complex tertiary care facility.  This position is aligned in the office of Assistant Director and has direct reporting responsibility to the Medical Center Assistant Director. The VSO has full delegated authority and responsibility for designing a Voluntary Service Program that meets the VASNHS.  The incumbent directs all phases of a community-wide program of public information concerning the VA Volunteer Services Program (VAVS), to Include the operation, evaluation, coordination (internal and external) of the VAVS Program.  Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

*Managing the General Post Fund and other financial accounts associated with the VAV Program

*Formulate the goals and objectives of the Voluntary Service Program to include policy, program assignment development, administrative operations, supervision of program staff and volunteers.

*Directs the recruitment, selection, placement and initial/ongoing training, evaluation, recognition, counseling of volunteers consisting of a diverse population.

*Assures competency of employees and scheduling appropriate corrective action to address identified deficiencies.

*Coordinates with the services to ensure that volunteers are competent to perform duties as assigned.

*Has regulatory authority, relative to VA policies regarding the Veteran Transportation Network.

*Coordinates all aspects of the Gift and Donation program, advises top management on the appropriateness of all donations.

*Directs all phases of a community -wide program of public information concerning the VAVS Program, to include the origination of information flyers, pamphlets, new releases, posters, displays, slide shows, as well as public speaking appearances.

*Develops short and long range plans for the accomplishment of VAVS program goals and objectives.

Work Schedule: 7:30 am to 4:00 pm US time
